Q: What is the Electro-Acuscope?
A: The Acuscope is a highly sophisticated electronic medical instrument which is design to scan and treat many types of pain and symptoms. It is one of a class of electrical stimulation called T.E.N.S. (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation.) T.E.N.S. means that the instrument uses electricity to treat pain by stimulating your nervous system without puncturing the skin. The Electro-Acuscope system is the most technologically advanced and effective form of T.E.N.S. equipment, available in health care today.

Q: Who uses the Acuscope?
A: The Acuscope is currently being used by professional athletic teams, sports medicine practices, hospitals, and by thousands of private physicians and therapist in every field of medicine throughout the world. The Acuscope is very effective with animals and is being used extensively in veterinary clinics as well as with humans. According to widespread publicity, many outstanding athletes have been significantly helped by Electro-Acuscope treatments; several who have received Acuscope treatment for pain and injury, won gold medals at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games.

Q: How does it work?
A: The Electro-Acuscope establishes a two-way communication between the machine’s own computer circuitry and the area of the patient’s body being treated. It measures such things as tissue conductivity, which is generally very low in an area of pain. It treats by introducing a gentle current in wave forms similar to the body’s own electrical currents. This increases the electrical activity of the affected tissue so that the cells can begin the work of self-repair.

Q: How long does the treatment take?
A: Each treatment will take from five to thirty minutes, depending on the extent of the problem(s) and the number of treatment you have already had. For example, it takes longer to treat the shoulders, neck, and back, than simply to treat a simple wrist, foot, or ankle. Since the results are cumulative, each additional Acuscope treatment generally takes less and less time.

Q: How long does it take for the treatment to work and how many treatments will I need?
A: Usually you will feel the results during or within several hours after the first or second treatment. A single five to fifteen minutes treatment is often followed by hours or even days of relief. Occasionally the relief from a single treatment is permanent. BE PATIENT - Sometimes three or four treatments are necessary before dramatic changes begin to take place. Occasionally it may even take 12-15 treatments. It is recommended that you complete your entire series of treatments in order to be assured of the optimal results. The average patient usually requires a series of six to ten treatments over a two to three week period to obtain long lasting results.

Q: If I have tried many other forms of therapy with little lasting relief, can Electro-Acuscope therapy still help me?
A: Possibly. The Acuscope delivers a different type of treatment than any other form of pain management by "normalizing" tissue. It is very often effective where nothing else has been able to help in the past.

Q: My pain seems to be stress related. Can Electro-Acuscope therapy still help me?
A: Yes. The therapy is also used for stress management. It can relax the muscles, the nerves, and improve circulation. If you are under excessive stress or your pain is stress related, your doctor or therapist may apply the Relaxation Mode in addition to treating directly on the site of pain.

Q: Does this program work for everyone?
A: No, however most doctors and therapists experienced in its use report that it helps a very high percentage of their patients.

Q: Is there anyone who should not be treated?
A: Under FDA regulations there are two contra-indications for use of electrical stimulation. Patients wearing demand type pacemakers should not be treated…Pregnant patients should not be treated.

Q: Is the treatment very expensive?
A: No. Compared to the cost of other pain management programs such as drugs taken over a long period of time and/or surgery, it is quite reasonable. In our office, the charge is $65 for a 20-30 minute treatment

Q: Will my insurance cover these treatments?
A: This varies with the type of policy you have. Most private insurance companies cover electrical stimulation. Check with your agent. Ask specifically about the payment policy regarding treatment under the general category of TENS or Electrical Stimulation. The staff in your doctor’s office may be able to advise you regarding your coverage.
